What The Laughing Man Is About
In November 1965 the East German documentarians Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann presented themselves as West German journalists and spent four hours in a Munich studio talking to the mercenary Siegfried Müller. Known as Kongo Müller, he had served as a mercenary in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1964 and 1965, putting down an uprising. Drink runs through the interview and he talks about his life and his campaigns in Africa. The film was made at DEFA’s newsreel and documentary studio and went out on East German television on 9 February 1966, and it made the pair internationally known. Because both its method and its political purpose are so explicit, it is taken as an example of directed documentary.
