Saga comes back to his village after a long absence and learns that his father has taken Nogma, the woman promised to him. The two still love each other and begin meeting in secret, but because Nogma is now his father’s wife, the village rule counts this as incest. That rule is the title: tilaï means the law. Idrissa Ouedraogo directed and builds the story with the hardness of a Greek tragedy; the subject is not the love but how far the rule itself will carry people. It won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1990. The record gives the film’s language as Fula; it was shot in Mooré, the language of the Mossi in Burkina Faso.
