What The Law Is About
A coastal town in southern Italy called Porto Manacore. Life there turns around a game played in the tavern: la legge, the law. By its rules one man is chosen as boss and earns the right to humiliate everyone else at the table as he pleases. The game is not entertainment but an instrument for settling who is afraid of whom. Marietta is trying to make her own way inside that arrangement. Jules Dassin adapted the film from Roger Vailland's 1957 novel. The master of the town, the poor fishermen, an engineer down from the north and a magistrate all move around the same square, each trying to establish some power over the others. Gina Lollobrigida, Marcello Mastroianni, Yves Montand and Melina Mercouri are in the same cast. A hot, crowded film built from beginning to end on class.
