What THE LEGEND & BUTTERFLY Is About
Made for Toei's seventieth anniversary on a budget of two billion yen, this runs a full two hours and forty eight minutes. Keishi Otomo takes the historical spine of Oda Nobunaga and his wife Nohime and builds an openly invented relationship drama on top of it. The marriage was arranged to repair hostility between neighbouring provinces, and the two of them never warmed to each other. When Imagawa Yoshimoto attacks with an overwhelming army and Nobunaga despairs at the gap in strength, it is Nohime who refuses to give up and works the plan out with him. The film wants Nobunaga out of the legend and back into a marriage, and Takuya Kimura and Haruka Ayase carry that choice between them.
