What March Comes In Like a Lion Is About
Rei Kiriyama is seventeen and a professional shogi player, having turned pro while still in middle school. He lives alone in Tokyo because his parents and younger sister were killed in a road accident when he was small. Meeting the three sisters who live nearby is his first connection in years with anyone outside the shogi world, and eating with them puts something into a life otherwise spent at a board. Keishi Otomo's 2017 film is adapted from Chica Umino's manga and takes the game seriously in its own right: the matches are not a pretext but the place where the character can breathe, or cannot. Its interest is less in grief than in slowly getting out of it.
