What The Legend of the Stardust Brothers Is About

Makoto Tezuka's 1985 Japanese film began as the adaptation of an album that did not exist: the musician Haruo Chikada first made an imaginary soundtrack album, and then a film was shot from it. A shady music mogul brings together the punk rebel Kan and the new wave crooner Shingo and turns them into a silver-jumpsuited synth-pop duo; they rise to number one and then fall. The film went unnoticed on release and disappeared for years; rediscovered and restored in 2016, it came to be cited as one of the strangest documents of 1980s Japanese pop culture. The visual language is entirely excessive: neon colours, paper sets, theatrical constructions. The director is the son of the manga artist Osamu Tezuka. Who it's for: viewers who like 1980s Japanese pop culture, musical parody and cult rediscoveries. Who it's not for: anyone wanting narrative consistency, or who will find the high tempo and heavy stylisation wearing.
