What The Legend of the Swordsman Is About
Ling Wu-chung decides to leave the martial world and withdraw with his friends, but on the road he falls into the middle of a power struggle inside the Sun Moon sect. Asia the Invincible, at the head of the sect, has applied the technique in a forbidden book and gained both unmatched power and a changed body. Ching Siu-tung made it as the second entry in the Swordsman series; Jet Li leads and Brigitte Lin created in Asia one of the most cited characters in Hong Kong cinema. The wire work and cutting speed leave realism entirely behind. The transformation of gender at the centre both pushes the genre's limits and is read as contentious today. Who it is for: viewers who like wuxia and nineties Hong Kong fantasy. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a plot they can follow.
