What A Chinese Ghost Story II Is About
After the first film Ning Tsai-shen is travelling on when he is jailed for nothing, escapes, and falls in with a group organised against the empire. This time the danger is not ghosts in the forest but the court itself and the thing that has installed itself inside it. Ching Siu-tung directed with Tsui Hark producing. Leslie Cheung leads again and Joey Wong plays an entirely different character, a rebel who happens to be the image of the last one. The sequel drops the love story for wire work, explosions and duelling priests, and given that it was made in Hong Kong in 1990 the political reading arrives on its own. It is faster than the first film and less moving. Who it is for: viewers who like Hong Kong fantasy action and wire choreography. Who it is not for: anyone looking for the romance of the original.
