What A Chinese Ghost Story Is About
A hapless debt collector working the countryside spends a night in an abandoned temple and meets the ghost who lives there. She does not want to harm him, and the power she is bound to will not allow otherwise. The film joins horror, comedy and romance inside a single scene; the shifts of register are abrupt and became defining for the genre. The flying fight sequences were shot on wires and were often taken as a model by later fantasy films. Tony Ching Siu-tung directed with Tsui Hark producing, and Leslie Cheung and Joey Wong star. Who it's for: those who like Hong Kong fantasy and mixtures of genre. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a consistent register; the film changes genre even within a scene.
