What The Life and Deaths of Christopher Lee Is About
Jon Spira’s documentary picks an odd method and makes it work: Christopher Lee is played by a marionette with Peter Serafinowicz supplying the voice, so the actor narrates his own life from inside a puppet. That life was always fuller than the filmography suggested. Aristocratic Italian roots, a family connection to the Bond novelist Ian Fleming, wartime service with the British and Finnish militaries, postwar Nazi hunting and a side career as a heavy metal singer all sit on the same page as the horror parts he is best known for. New interviews come from Peter Jackson, Joe Dante, John Landis, his niece Harriet Walter and his biographer Jonathan Rigby, and the mixture of archive, animation and puppetry keeps the affection visible. It premiered at FrightFest in August 2024.
