What The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin Is About
In the summer of 1941, as war with Germany breaks out, Private Chonkin is left to guard a military aircraft that has come down near a small Ukrainian village. Not overly gifted, Chonkin is forgotten by his superiors, and he builds himself a life out of courting Nyura the village postmistress, a little farming and a guard post nobody checks. It comes apart when the local militia are tipped off. Jiří Menzel adapted the film from the first two books of Vladimir Voinovich’s trilogy, written in 1969 and banned in the Soviet Union. It mocks nearly every type the Soviet system produced while leaving its naive and decent soldier alone. It is a Russian, Czech, British, French and Italian co-production. The record lists the language as English, though the cast and the production are Russian, and the slug has been truncated, losing its final letter.
