The Life of Vergie Winters

Vergie Winters lives in a small town called Parkville. She sells women’s hats in a shop. She and the young lawyer John Shadwell love each other. They are not allowed to marry, though. John marries Laura, who is wealthy and ambitious. The marriage opens a way for him in politics. Over the years the man rises as far as the Senate. He keeps up his relationship with Vergie in secret. A daughter is born of that relationship. John and his wife adopt the child. He lets Vergie name her, and the girl becomes Joan. Years later Laura shoots her husband at Vergie’s house. Vergie will not say who the killer was. She is convicted of the murder and sent to prison. Ann Harding and John Boles appear in the eighty two minute film, an American production Alfred Santell finished in 1934.
