What The Light Shines Only There Is About
In Hakodate, Tatsuo has handed himself over to drink and gambling since an accident at the quarry where he worked, and he meets Takuji, a young man out on parole, who takes him home to a ramshackle house by the beach. There he finds Takuji’s older sister Chinatsu, and a man who threw love away meets a woman who gave up on it, in the short northern summer. Mipo O made the film from Yasushi Sato’s novel of 1989; Sato was born and raised in Hakodate, and the city is not scenery here but the thing standing in everyone’s way. It looks at how poverty binds people to each other coldly, and without asking to be pitied.
