What The Light Thief Is About
The electrician of a small town in the south of Kyrgyzstan is a man who gives light to the neighbours who cannot pay by tampering with their meters; in the town they call him Mister Light. He lives poorly with his wife and four daughters while dreaming of making cheap energy from the wind. A businessman who comes to the town says he will back that dream, but what he really wants is to take over the local administration, and the change he brings carries off the old order with it. The film looks at the corruption and favouritism of the post Soviet years in a calm but plain way. Aktan Arym Kubat both directs and takes the lead; the eighty minute Kyrgyz production was completed in 2010.
