What The Lodger Is About
The Lodger is adapted from Marie Belloc Lowndes's novel, the same source Alfred Hitchcock had adapted as a silent film in 1927. Where Hitchcock's version kept the lodger's guilt ambiguous and updated the setting to his own era, John Brahm's version explicitly names the killer as Jack the Ripper, sets the story in the 1890s, and leaves far less doubt about the guilt of Laird Cregar's character, trading Hitchcock's paranoid ambiguity for a more overtly sinister, conclusive take. Who it's for: anyone curious how the same source novel was reinterpreted across two eras, especially set against Hitchcock's silent version. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a thriller built on ambiguity and psychological doubt, since this version is far more direct and conclusive.
