What Singapore Is About
After the war Matt Gordon returns to Singapore to recover the pearls he hid there. In the city he goes back over his own past: Linda, his fiancee before the war, and her disappearance during the Japanese attack. Now Linda is in front of him again, with no memory and married to a wealthy planter. Meanwhile a black market dealer named Mauribus is after the pearls. John Brahm’s film sits between noir and exotic adventure, with Fred MacMurray and Ava Gardner in the leads. It also carries the colonial gaze of its period intact, which is where it stumbles hardest today.
