Aleksandr Sokurov's first feature was adapted from the writing of Andrei Platonov. It is set in the early 1920s, just after the civil war. Nikita, a Red Army soldier, comes home and finds Lyuba again, but neither of them can put themselves back together after what has happened. The film dissolves its plot almost entirely: the image darkens, speeds up, fragments of archive enter, the sound comes away from the picture. It chooses to build a state of mind rather than to narrate. Sokurov made it as a student film and it could not be shown for years, reaching an audience only in 1987. It is now treated as the seed of everything in his cinema.
