What The Lovers and the Despot Is About
In 1978 the South Korean actress Choi Eun-hee was abducted in Hong Kong. Shortly afterwards her ex-husband, the director Shin Sang-ok, disappeared as well. Both had been taken to North Korea, where Kim Jong-il, a devoted film enthusiast, had decided they would build the country a film industry. They worked there for years and made seventeen features. Ross Adam and Robert Cannan build their documentary out of Choi's own account, secret audio recordings and footage from the period. Whether Shin was genuinely kidnapped or went of his own accord is still argued about, and the film does not dispose of that doubt but leaves it standing. One of the strangest chapters in the history of cinema.
