The work is a compilation of the first films of the Lumière brothers. Eighty five have been chosen out of more than a thousand shot between 1895 and 1897. Most were made by Louis Lumière or by camera operators who travelled the world. Each is a silent single take running about half a minute, and what they show is daily life itself. The images were mastered again from original thirty five millimetre material. The narration is by the director Bertrand Tavernier. What Tavernier says is this: from here on it is no longer the history of an invention but the history of film making. Brian Q. Kelley’s American production, sixty one minutes long, was completed in 1996.
