What The Magic Box Is About
We meet William Friese-Greene old, ill, poor and mostly forgotten, though he was once young William Green, a gifted portrait photographer who added his first wife's surname to his own for professional use. His search for a way to throw moving pictures onto a screen turned into an obsession and rearranged the lives of everyone close to him. John Boulting made the film for the 1951 Festival of Britain, with Robert Donat as the inventor and what feels like every well known face in British cinema turning up in a small part. Laurence Olivier's policeman thinks the man is a lunatic until the images appear on a bedsheet.
