What The Making of Fanny and Alexander Is About
While Fanny and Alexander was being shot, Arne Carlsson turned the camera on the set itself, and out of that material he and Bergman built this documentary. Rehearsal rooms, the setting up of scenes, the work with actors; the film makes no grand statements and shows the practice of the job. The way of working with the cinematographer Sven Nykvist is in it, and so is his relationship with actors he had worked with for years, Erland Josephson and Gunnar Björnstrand among them. It is possible to follow, step by step, how Bergman assembled the largest production of his career. The documentary was shown in 1984 but only reached a wide audience in 1986, when it went out on Swedish television.
