The Mine

Jussi, a young and ambitious civil servant, is put in charge of the environmental permit for a large nickel mine in northern Finland. The mine works by an entirely new method, creates jobs in one of the poorest regions in the country, and has a charismatic globe-trotting entrepreneur behind it. Jussi gradually realises that information is being kept from him and that the method has serious environmental consequences; then the same mine arrives with a second permit application, and a job offer alongside it. Aleksi Salmenperä directed and Pekko Pesonen wrote it. The film draws on real events but opens by stating that it is fiction inspired by reality; the record’s summary uses the real names as though this were a documentary. It won best screenplay and best actor at the Jussi Awards in 2017.
