What The Moon Is Blue Is About

Patricia is young, blunt and says whatever she thinks. She meets Donald, an architect, at the top of the Empire State Building, and he invites her back to his flat for dinner. The same evening his upstairs neighbour David, older and a practised womaniser, turns up too. Both men want the same thing. Patricia tells them both plainly where she stands: she intends to remain a virgin until she marries. The night passes in that three-way conversation. Otto Preminger directs, with William Holden, David Niven and Maggie McNamara. Because it used the words virgin and seduce, the film was refused a Production Code seal; Preminger and United Artists released it without one anyway. That became a turning point in the unravelling of the censorship system.
