The Moromete Family

A Romanian village, 1937. Ilie Moromete has land, and more debt than land. The tax collector is at the door, his sons are thinking about leaving rather than working, and his wife wants the share that belongs to her own children. He tries to manage all of it with jokes, delays and decisions put off. But as the land shrinks, putting things off stops working. One night his older sons take the animals and leave, and the order the father built collapses. Behind all of it is a country with a war coming. Stere Gulea directs, adapting Marin Preda's novel, with Victor Rebengiuc as Moromete and Luminița Gheorghiu in the cast. Two hours and twenty-two minutes. One of the most remembered films in Romanian cinema.
