What Moromete Family: On the Edge of Time Is About
Ilie Moromete's family lives in the Romanian countryside, and this time the youngest son, Niculae, is at the centre. The whole order of the village rested on owning land and working it; the arrival of the communist regime and collectivisation pulls that order up by the root. Stere Gulea's 2018 film is the sequel to his own first Moromete picture, counted among the most admired adaptations in Romanian cinema. It does not argue about politics directly. It looks at what is breaking inside one family and shows what a vast transformation looks like at the smallest scale. Horatiu Malaele plays Ilie Moromete.
