The Mouth of the Wolf

Enzo comes out of prison and goes back to Genoa. The city is his: the port, the narrow streets, the old buildings. Someone has been waiting for him. Mary waited years for him through letters and visits; both of them have spent most of their lives not outside society exactly but somewhere along its edge. The film tells how these two people come back together, alongside archive footage of the Genoa neighbourhoods that were demolished. Pietro Marcello's seventy-eight-minute film stands between documentary and fiction. Enzo and Mary play themselves, and what they tell is true. It won the top prize at the Turin Film Festival and the Caligari prize at the Berlinale.
