What The Mysteries of Paris Is About
The Marquis Rodolphe de Sombrueil runs a working man down with his carriage. When the man dies he takes the widow under his protection: she has been accused of a theft she did not commit and is looking for her missing daughter. Rodolphe goes about in disguise through the back streets, taverns and dens of Paris and finds not one crime but an entire arrangement. André Hunebelle's 1962 film comes from Eugène Sue's novel, serialised from 1842 and a genuine shock to France at the time. Sue wrote it to put poverty on the page; the film turns it into a swashbuckler with Jean Marais. That is what popular French cinema of the period did: the social novel becomes a spectacle.
