What The Necessities of Life Is About
In 1952 Tivii, an Inuit hunter with tuberculosis, leaves his home and family in the north and is sent to a sanatorium in Quebec City. He does not speak French, everything around him is foreign, and he closes in on himself; when he refuses to eat and says he wants to die, his nurse Carole sees that the illness is not the real danger. She arranges for an orphaned boy, Kaki, who speaks both languages, to be moved to the same institution. Passing his own culture on to the child puts Tivii back on his feet, and in the end he begins thinking of adopting the boy and taking him north. Natar Ungalaaq appears in Benoit Pilon’s hundred and two minute Canadian film, completed in 2008.
