What The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz Is About
The last day of creation. A stranger arrives in London and nobody knows who he is or where he came from. By the time he leaves, the universe will have been erased. Ben Hopkins sets that up in 2000 as a riddle and then declines to solve it; as the film goes on the stranger passes from identity to identity and the city changes shape along with him. Tom Fisher plays all of those identities himself. It is black and white, its humour runs between bureaucracy and apocalypse, and its surrealism is of a kind British cinema rarely attempts. That it refuses to explain itself to the end makes it unbearable for some viewers and, for exactly that reason, valuable to others.
