One night the workers notice that the management is removing machines and raw materials from their own factory. When they organise to watch the equipment and block the relocation of production, they are made to stand at their posts with no work to do as a form of retaliation, while negotiations over mass redundancies go on. The pressure breaks the workers down along with the world around them. Pedro Pinho’s nearly three-hour film starts as a realist drama about labour and turns into a musical along the way, with professional actors and actual workers in the same cast. Tiago Hespanha, Luisa Homem, Leonor Noivo and Pinho wrote the screenplay from an idea by Jorge Silva Melo. It screened in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2017 and won the FIPRESCI prize.
