What The Overcoat Is About

Carmine De Carmine is a modest municipal clerk whose old coat has worn through and whose salary will not stretch to a new one. Then he overhears two contractors talking, and the town secretary hands him an advance in exchange for his silence. The coat is bought. Anyone who knows Gogol's 1842 story can see where this is going. Alberto Lattuada moved it to Italy in the fifties and laid noir and comedy together on a neorealist floor, with Cesare Zavattini among the writers. It was warmly received at Cannes in 1952 without taking a prize, and Renato Rascel won the Silver Ribbon for best actor in 1953.
