What The Mill on the Po Is About
In the Po Valley of the nineteenth century, a girl from a wealthy family who is engaged to a well off farmer is left penniless and forced to work for her fiancé’s relatives. Unrest in the countryside is pushed to extremes by workers and landowners alike, and it turns first to violence and then to tragedy. Alberto Lattuada adapted the third part of Riccardo Bacchelli’s novel of the same name, telling the class conflict of agrarian Italy in the language of neorealism. Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli and Luigi Comencini all worked on the screenplay, Carlo Ponti produced and Aldo Tonti shot it. Carla Del Poggio and Jacques Sernas star, and the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1949.
