What The Ox Is About
In the winter of 1867 famine has struck the whole of Sweden. Helge Roos, a farmhand, sees that his wife and small daughter will starve, kills one of his master’s oxen and hides the meat. The crime comes out quickly; the man is tried and sentenced to life, and the woman left behind has to face both the poverty and the eyes of the parish alone. The film tells the act not as a robbery but as what going hungry makes a person do. Sven Nykvist’s ninety two minute Swedish film rests on court records of the period; Stellan Skarsgård, Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann appear.
