What Riff-Raff Is About
Stevie comes out of prison in Scotland and finds work on a London building site. The conditions are wretched, there is no safety, and most of the men work under false names: some because they have no papers, some so their unemployment benefit is not cut. Friends find him a place squatting in an empty council flat. Then he meets Susan, an Irish woman trying to make it as a singer. Ken Loach directed; Robert Carlyle leads. The screenplay was written by Bill Jesse, who really worked in construction and died before the film came out.
