What The Passion of Augustine Is About
A convent music school in rural Quebec in the nineteen sixties. The nuns teach music to children from every kind of household, and Mother Augustine runs the place. The Quiet Revolution and the Second Vatican Council land in the same years; the local government wants the school closed and folded into public education, and Augustine has to think again about what happens to the school and to her own position. Léa Pool wrote it with Marie Vien, and Céline Bonnier plays the lead. It does not line religion up against modernisation; it watches what happens to the people inside an institution while it is being closed. It won six Quebec Cinema Awards.
