What The Place Promised in Our Early Days Is About
In a divided Japan an enormous tower rises into the sky on the far side of the border. Three high school students secretly build an aircraft and promise to fly there, and then one of the girls disappears. Rather than explaining its science fiction premise, the film makes it the carrier of a longing; the tower is not a puzzle but the emblem of a promise. The narrative gathers itself when, three years later, the two boys find her. It is Makoto Shinkai's first feature. He had previously made shorts almost single-handed, and here too he took on much of the visual work himself. Before watching: the narrative is deliberately incomplete and the science fiction does not hold together. What his later films do emotionally is here in a rawer form.
