What Children Who Chase Lost Voices Is About
Makoto Shinkai's 2011 animation follows a girl who listens to a radio powered by a stone left by her father. She descends into a country underground. Her teacher is on the same road. The film turns grief into a fantastic journey; the narrative makes the wish to bring back the dead its real subject. It is among the director's longest works. The drawing of landscape stands out. The tone is more adventurous than his earlier films. Who it's for: those who like emotional fantasy animation. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the director's own register; the film sits close to another studio's tradition.
