Mirai

Four-year-old Kun does not know what to do with his jealousy when his sister Mirai is born. A passage opens in the garden and he travels to his family at other times: his sister arriving from the future, his mother as a girl, his great-grandfather as a young man. Mamoru Hosoda wrote and directed, produced by Studio Chizu. The idea came from how his own son reacted to becoming a big brother. It premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes on 16 May 2018 and opened in Japan on 20 July 2018. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the Critics' Choice Awards, losing all three to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It won the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature Independent and Japan's Animation of the Year. It took around 23.7 million dollars in Japan and 30.4 million worldwide, opening at number two with a noticeably smaller weekend than Hosoda's previous film. Ninety-one percent of 85 Rotten Tomatoes reviews are positive, with Metacritic at 81. Who it is for: viewers who like family animation and small, everyday stories. Who it is not for: anyone expecting adventure. The film is about a child getting past his jealousy and its episodes are loosely joined.
