Scarlet

Mamoru Hosoda's animated film built from Hamlet. The lead is a woman: Scarlet, princess of Denmark. Her uncle Claudius kills her father, marries her mother and remakes the country to his own order. Scarlet prepares for revenge, is poisoned, and finds herself in an intermediate place called the Otherworld, where past and future are woven together and people from different eras can occupy the same ground. There she meets Hijiri, a paramedic from the twenty-first century. He is against violence, and the film's actual argument is set there: is revenge necessary at all? The visual structure is split: the real world is hand-drawn 2D animation and the Otherworld is entirely computer-generated 3D. It was produced by Hosoda's own Studio Chizu. Mana Ashida, Masaki Okada and Koji Yakusho are among the voices. It premiered at the Venice film festival in 2025. Visually a strong choice for anyone who likes Hosoda and large-scale animation. The storytelling divided critics: the structure taken from Hamlet and Hosoda's own concern do not always run in the same direction, and the middle section comes apart.
