What The Plouffe Family Is About
The life of the Plouffes, an ordinary working family in Quebec, is followed from the last years of the Great Depression into the Second World War. There are five in the house and each is pulled in a different direction: one wants to be an athlete, one thinks of the priesthood, one goes after love, one gets mixed up in politics. When war is declared and conscription comes up, the family finds itself in the middle of the tension between Quebec and English Canada. Gilles Carle’s two hundred and fifty nine minute Canadian film was adapted from Roger Lemelin’s novel and is counted among the large productions in which Quebec tells its own story. Gabriel Arcand and Pierre Curzi appear; it was completed in 1981.
