What The Pregnant Papa Is About
In the village of Ratot every male is called Bela, after the chairman of the council. When Rozi names her newborn son Jozsi, that arrangement breaks. The boy grows up like the others but always stands apart from the crowd; for a long time he takes no interest in girls, and when he finally gets together with Agika he inexplicably becomes pregnant. Neither the village nor the authorities know what to do about it. The film drops an absurd invention onto village life and onto the workings of bureaucracy. Adapted from a book by Gyorgy Schwajda, the eighty minute Hungarian comedy is the only feature Dezso Garas directed, and it was completed in 1989.
