Salim Shaheen What The Prince of Nothingwood Is About
Sonia Kronlund’s first film as a director spends a week on set with Salim Shaheen, the most prolific filmmaker in Afghanistan. What is being shot is his hundred and eleventh feature, made with almost no money, limited equipment and a cast often drawn from whoever happens to be standing nearby. Some call him the Ed Wood of Afghanistan, and he seems untroubled by the label. Kronlund points the camera at his enthusiasm without laughing at him, and records what a film set actually means in Kabul: who is risking what, and why finding an actress is close to impossible. It screened at Cannes in 2017.
