The Prisoner of Shark Island

John Ford's 1936 film tells what followed the assassination of Abraham Lincoln through one man. Doctor Samuel Mudd sets the broken leg of the fleeing John Wilkes Booth, is judged part of the conspiracy and sentenced to life. He serves it in an island fortress off Florida, where his work as a physician during a yellow fever outbreak changes his position. Ford builds the film as a clear story of injustice and presents Mudd as entirely innocent; historians still debate his prior acquaintance with Booth and his role in the events. The film's handling of its Black characters carries the clichés of its period and is uncomfortable now. Visually it is regarded as among Ford's strongest thirties work. Who it's for: viewers who like John Ford and studio drama drawn from American history. Who it's not for: anyone wanting historical accuracy and a film free of the era's racist representation.
