What The Proud Valley Is About
David Goliath, an American sailor who arrives in Cardiff, goes looking for work in the coal valleys of Wales and, because of his powerful voice, is quickly taken into the colliery choir; once the choir accepts him the miners do too. After a deadly explosion the pit is closed, the village is out of work, and getting it running again will require someone to accept a heavy price. In Pen Tennyson’s seventy six minute Ealing production, Paul Robeson plays David Goliath, with Rachel Thomas and Edward Chapman in the cast. Shooting finished in September 1939 and the ending was recut once the war broke out; a finale in which the workers took over the pit was replaced by a scene in which management makes concessions.
