What The Purple Sea Is About
On a Sicilian island at the end of the nineteenth century, Angela refuses to hide her love for Sara, her friend since childhood. Her father is against it and so is the church. In the end there turns out to be only one way the village can accept the relationship, and that way requires Angela to give up her own name and her appearance as a woman. So the subject is not tolerance but the rules governing who may be seen as what. Donatella Maiorca works from a real case, holding family, community and gender roles together.
