What The Ra Expeditions Is About
Thor Heyerdahl set out to cross the Atlantic in boats built of papyrus, to argue that Mediterranean civilisations could have reached the Americas in antiquity. The documentary follows the two attempts, in 1969 and 1970: the first boat, Ra, did not reach its destination, while Ra II sailed from Safi in May 1970 and arrived in Barbados fifty-seven days and four thousand miles later. The crew of seven was deliberately assembled from different countries and backgrounds, and part of what interested Heyerdahl was whether they could live together in the middle of an ocean. Credited to Lennart Ehrenborg together with Heyerdahl, the film records the failure of the experiment as attentively as the success. It was nominated for the best documentary Oscar.
