What The Rape of Europa Is About
During the Second World War the art of Europe was looted systematically: museums were emptied, private collections were seized and dispersed, some works were burned. The documentary tells that looting and the effort made against it. Joan Allen narrates. It runs close to two hours and follows the subject country by country. Richard Berge, Bonni Cohen and Nicole Newnham directed the film together. The source is Lynn H. Nicholas's book of the same name. The documentary separates two things: the looting itself is documented history; the question of restitution is still going on and still being argued in the courts. What became of the works taken from Jewish families is the film's heaviest section.
