What The Ravine of Goodbye Is About

Tatsushi Ōmori's 2013 film is adapted from a novel by Shuichi Yoshida. It opens with the death of a child in a quiet neighbourhood: the mother, Satomi, is taken in, her relationship with her neighbour Ozaki comes out, and the tip comes from Kanako, the woman Ozaki lives with. A magazine reporter follows the case, and the further he goes the less the news frame holds, until the film leaves the criminal file behind for the past of that couple. What drew Ōmori to the book was exactly this: two people choosing to live under one roof after an act of violence. Yoko Maki carries the film, which took the Special Jury Prize at the 35th Moscow International Film Festival.
