The Reporter

The documentary follows the decades long career of the Finnish reporter Hannu Karpo. Karpo became a name known across the whole country for work that carried the troubles of ordinary people onto television. The film gives both how he turned into a phenomenon and what that cost. What it means, for the people behind a door, when a reporter knocks on it with a camera is another question the account asks. The power television held in that period makes up the background. People close to Karpo and members of his family speak as well. The account tries to hold admiration and distance at the same time. Ari Matikainen’s eighty four minute Finnish documentary was completed in 2020.
