Budd Boetticher's 1960 gangster film follows Jack Legs Diamond, a real figure from the Prohibition years. Diamond and his sickly brother Eddie arrive in New York as jewel thieves, and after a short stretch inside Diamond decides that robbing robbers pays better, working his way into the circle around the reigning boss Arnold Rothstein. The man Ray Danton plays is handsome, cold and entirely turned in on himself; the film does not admire him, it just watches him go up and come down. Boetticher prepared by talking to people who had known Diamond and learned that even his own world had not taken him very seriously. Warren Oates plays Eddie.
